Some people try online dating because they’re looking for a companion, some for love, or some just want to see who’s out there.
15 million people in the UK are registered for online dating and one in five relationships now start online. It’s the third most popular way to meet (after pubs and through friends). What about the over 50s – often grandmas & grandpas – what might they want to try to gain? Companionship or a more serious relationship?
Here are some top dating tips for the more mature dater:
Dating can be daunting at any age, but one of the main obstacles when finding love is not getting yourself out there on a daily basis. Lots of people are terrible at not making the effort to go out – getting home, putting on their PJ’s on and watching TV all night. But if you’re looking for some kind of relationship any potential partners won’t know you exist if you hide away each day, so get on those dating sites & be proactive!
Don’t totally rely on the internet. Go out as much as possible on evenings or weekends. It doesn’t have to be to a loud pub or bar: activities such as dance classes, special interest groups/clubs or the library all have potential for meeting single men or women.
Be open-minded & don’t have a fixed ideal partner – do they actually exist? We all have human foibles & faults so stay open to all personalities, looks, backgrounds and interests. You may be surprised & it gives you a much wider field of potential friends/partners if you give them a chance. If it doesn’t work out then you’ve at least met someone different to your usual acquaintances!
If you meet someone – do speak. If it’s arranged in advance prepare various topics of conversation to avoid those awkward silences & find out more about each other. Remember this is not a cross-examination, but a friendly chat to discover a little about each other.
Don’t give up! Be persistent & have fun meeting new people. If you don’t want to be their partner, could you become their friend?
Remember most importantly though, be yourself. There is only one of you and if your date doesn’t like that, they’re not THE ONE.
There are lots of online dating sites aimed at over 50s. Take a look at some of these … over 50s dating Bristol, over 50s dating Cambridgeshire, over 50s dating Derbyshire, over 50s dating Dorset or over 50s dating Edinburgh.
