Adventure Belt Review
I absolutely love taking Sophie out & about, watching her explore different surroundings from parks to shopping centres. However, I must admit I am often filled with a sense of dread before we leave. See, my fiercely independent 2 year old does not always want to hold hands to stay safe. Like most toddlers, she would much rather do her own thing. Depending on where we are, rather than always enjoying our time out, I spend much of the time calling out to her to “STOP!!!!”, telling her, “No we aren’t going that way” or, “Please don’t do that, it’s too dangerous!”. Before being heavily pregnant, if she slipped her reins, I would sometimes have to run after her. Now? Running is just not possible. She is way too fast & I would never catch up with her.
When I was offered something designed to make outdoor trips easier AND safer, I jumped at the chance. The product I received is called an Adventure Belt & is created by More 2 Explore. The Adventure Belt is an alternative to traditional toddler reins, harnesses and wrist straps & is designed for 2-5 year olds. It actually links parent & child belt to belt – the belts are strapped around both yours and your child’s waist – via an elasticated bungee. This means for parent’s there’s hands-free peace of mind, and for kids a sense of independence.
For me the idea of not having to hold a strap in my hand, like with traditional reins, makes it seem much safer. You don’t have to worry about dropping the handle or, in Sophie’s case, demanding to hold the ‘lead’ herself which defeats the whole point of the reins!
Both the adult & child parts of the belt are adjustable to fit your waist (good job considering how large my baby bump currently is!). Also, the elasticated bungee strap is adjustable, meaning you can choose how far you want your child to go from you. The fact the strap is elasticated also means that it takes much of the force if your little one does decide to run off.
Did Sophie Wear It?
When the belt arrived I was a bit concerned that Sophie would refuse to wear it. Instead, she actually started trying to put it on herself & told me she ‘liked it’. She now calls it her ‘special belt’. As an added bonus, the Adventure Belt comes with a small pocket. Sophie loved collecting little bits from home to put in her pocket before we would go out. This included mini figures to play with, fruit bars to snack on or some money to spend in the shop. We also leave it empty sometimes so she can collect items in the park to bring home, for example leaves & small stones.
What I love about the belt is that it is so simple to take on and off. With one click, Sophie can go from being safely attached to me to being completely independent. This is really handy when going into a busy place or suddenly encountering a body of water. Although easy for the adult to use, the 3 way opening system means it is not possible for small children to take off, even for the most creative of toddlers!
I will most certainly be continuing to use the Adventure Belt with Sophie. I can see it being a life saver when baby boy is born as I won’t have enough hands to deal with both of them! We have used the Adventure Belt in busy shopping centres, supermarkets, the park & near busy roads. Each time has been a success. You can certainly tell this belt was designed by a parent – the child-friendly colours, the pocket, the elasticated bungee strap & the hands-free element of it make it a fantastic product. If you have 2 children, there is also the option to add a second belt. This is something I will be doing when little man starts walking!
