How to Spring Clean Your Home & Life: Our 5 Top Tips to Reduce the Clutter
It’s the first day of Spring & the dark, Winter days are starting to fade. This change in seasons seems like the perfect time to re-organise our lives. Whether its throwing away unwanted items, deep cleaning the kitchen appliances or planning your weekly meals in advance, now is the time to declutter!
The 20th of March is marked as the first day of Spring & we have joined up with the Bed Guru #SpringCleanGuru campaign to give our top tips on keeping your home & life decluttered this Spring.
Clear Out Unwanted Items
The first step to a successful Spring Clean is to remove any clutter you have accumulated. The simplest way to do this is by working through each room systematically, asking yourself what you need & what you don’t. You could even categorise each item & sort them, for example:
- Keep & put away
- Give away / Sell
- Throw out
Generally, if you haven’t used something in the past 6 months, then you should consider selling / throwing it away. Obviously there are exceptions, for example seasonal clothing, but by being fairly ruthless you can get rid of any excess items from your home thereby creating lots more room.
Create More Storage
One of the main issues we face in our homes is a lack of obvious storage. During your Spring Clean it may be time to think about new storage solutions. Examples include shelving for books, stackable boxes for paperwork or hanging storage for clothing.
One place we can get creative with storage is in the bedroom, specifically, under our beds. This area is often overlooked which results in a lot of wasted space. Utilise this space with some storage boxes or bags to keep your spare bedding, unused seasonal clothes or extra shoes in. For our house, we invested in a divan bed which is basically a built in storage system. Complete with four large drawers, it’s a great way to create more storage space. Bed Guru has a range of divan bases to choose from, including this one which is the ultimate in ‘hidden storage’!
You would be surprised at how much dirt, hair & dust builds up around the home, particularly underneath heavy furniture items. Deep clean your home by taking the time to move large furniture & cleaning underneath. You could use a high performance vacuum cleaner for the carpets or a steam mop for hard floors.
Bring out your arsenal of cleaning products & scrub the kitchen appliances, polish the furniture & disinfect the bathroom. Don’t forget to flip & rotate your mattress for extra freshness & to restore its bounce. Open the windows & let the fresh air & natural light in.
One area of our lives we often neglect to sort is our digital one. Our computers and phones are often full of files or apps we don’t need, so delete them. Not only will this create more space on your devices, but will also make them run faster.
If you have lots of photos or documents that you want to keep, but don’t necessarily need on your computer, consider purchasing an external hard drive to store it all safely.
Organise Your Life
Our lives are often full of commitments – things we need to do at home, work or with friends & family etc. Sometimes it’s a good idea to take a step back, write them all down & decide which ones you really need to do. Learn how to say no & make more time to do the things you actually enjoy.
Of course there are some things in life we can’t avoid such as cleaning. To make your day more organised & productive create a daily routine, for example, give yourself set days to do the laundry. Also, you could plan your meals for the coming week & choose a day to batch cook them. Write your daily / weekly routine down & try to stick to it as best you can. Hopefully, these new routines will bring a new sense of calm to your life.
