“Colour Match” is a great way to introduce colour names and recognition!
Early maths has a big focus on sorting and grouping items – this activity fits perfectly as you can group items by their colour!
For this example I chose to focus on the colour black (this was linked to our Baa Baa Black Sheep theme).
What You Need
A picture (or object) of something in the colour you want to focus on – I used a photo of a black sheep.
Not needed! This activity should only use things already in your house 🙂
How to Play Colour Match
In your chosen colour, and with your little one, find as many things in your house / room that match it!
This is also a great opportunity to start introducing the names of everyday items (e.g. television).
Collect some of the small items that are in your chosen colour and put them into a container – we used Sophie’s messy play tray. Let your little one explore the items independently (or supervised, depending on what you choose to put in there!).
What are you helping your little one to do?
- Learn & say colour names
- Group & sort objects by colour
- Exploring familiar or unfamiliar objects and finding out what they can do with them
