Lifecake Review: Remembering Life’s Sweetest Moments
Since childhood I have loved taking & looking back on family photographs. My parents have a range of photo albums in their house which, as a child, I would spend hours looking through. There’s something about holding a physical photograph that I find really special, particularly now in the digital era whereby most photos are stored on computers or websites like Facebook. I have been looking for ways to keep more recent photos of our growing family in a bound album so, when Lifecake got in touch asking if I would like to try out their photo storage platforms & printing services, I couldn’t say no.
Lifecake is a visual storytelling platform for childhood photos and videos.
As parents, we take thousands of photos and videos of our children that, over time tell us the story of their childhood.
Unorganised, these snapshots can overwhelm our phones and folders. It can also be a challenge when we want to share these photos with our families, but don’t want the whole world to see them on social platforms like Facebook. This is where Lifecake comes in. Lifecake is a simple, private, lasting place to keep, share, and relive childhood moments — across time, distance, and generations.
How Does It Work?
Lifecake is a safe & secure place where you can upload, store, share & order photos of your children. The platform is available in both an app & website format.
Lifecake requires you to setup an account (totally free!) on either the app or the website. You then tell it the names & birth dates of your children. I created 2 albums on my account – one for Sophie & one for the baby when he is born. This keeps the photos separate &, as you upload photos, creates a visual timeline for each of their childhoods. You can also invite & give family members secure access to your photos as well.
I found that the easiest way for me to use the site was to upload my photos directly from my computer onto my area of the Lifecake website. I then downloaded the Lifecake app which automatically synced with the website, giving me immediate access to all my uploaded photos.
Lifecake isn’t just a storage platform, but is also a place where you can order beautiful personalised gifts & items. From the Lifecake website you can create a range of photo books, whereas the app gives you access to a whole range of other products. I chose to order a calendar & a selection of small, individual prints of Sophie. There are, however, a range of other items to choose from including photo mugs, tote bags, mobile phone covers & fridge magnets.
To design the calendar, simply open the app & click on the settings icon. Find the “Print Shop” shopping trolley icon & press – this then takes you to the store. To create the calendar, choose which photos you would like to include (you have to choose 48 as the calendar shows 4 per page).
If you are happy for your photos to be in any order, then upload all 48 at once & the app will automatically sort them into months for you. If, like me, you wanted a ‘theme’ for each month (e.g. Christmas in December) then you need to upload 4 photos at a time so they go into the correct month. This was the one downside of my design experience… Aside from this, I enjoyed creating my calendar & the real-time preview really helped me visualise how the calendar was going to look.
I was exceedingly impressed with how quickly my calendar arrived (within 3 days) & was very pleased with the quality. The perfect Christmas present for the grandparents!
Calendars cost £20 & are A4 in size. Each individual photo is 9.1cm x 9.1cm
The other item I ordered was a set of 12 individual prints. The print squares are 9.8cm x 9.8cm & are printed on premium card in a matte finish.
Again, I was really impressed. The prints are clearly high quality & the colours have come out really well. I will be using these prints to create my own ‘Sophie’ album, but they could be used in any number of ways. You could create a collage or give them out as mini Christmas presents for family members.
A set of 12 prints cost £8.
When ordering products, once you are happy with your designs, simply add any products to your basket, choose how you want to pay & press the green button! All done – overall a super simple ordering process!
In terms of the Lifecake website & app, these are actually free to use and join. However, you can sign up for a membership which gives you extra storage and no ads.
As a Sophie’s Nursery reader, Lifecake have very kindly offered an extra 10GB of storage AND 25% off your first print products order!
