Pregnancy Update Week 33…
Wow this has been the most interesting week so far…!! I’d been having twinges & some Braxtons all week, but also felt like something ‘wasn’t quite right’ for a little while. Baby was moving well so I decided to leave it & wait for my next midwife appointment. Come Thursday night I could NOT sit still, I was like a Jack in the Box around the house with a really weird feeling in my stomach. By 11pm I had my head down the toilet being very sick. This went on all night. Even the tiniest sip of water would set me off again. A stomach bug or a return of hyperemesis? By the morning I was totally drained, I couldn’t move & felt so dehydrated I decided to ring the maternity ward & see if I could come in to be put on a drip.
Husband drove me straight in & we were seen immediately as my pulse rate was reading 154! My urine sample came back with +4 Ketones, so I was severely dehydrated. I was hooked up to the baby heart rate & contraction monitor. All seemed OK until the midwife spotted some large baby heart rate decelerations. At this point everything went crazy. A doctor came running into my bed area & started doing various tests whilst hooking me up to a drip. I started getting pretty full on contractions & was promptly whizzed down to delivery suite. I was pretty much told baby was coming & that one of the tests had come back positive that I was in pre-term labour. The main concern, however, were the heart rate dips in baby. I was put in a robe & told it was more than likely I was going to be taken down to theatre for a C-Section.
Within the next half an hour, & after speaking to a couple of consultants, they decided baby’s heart rate was improving slowly & decided to hold off on the cesarean. I was given medication to stop the contractions & a steroid injection to develop baby’s lungs in case he did arrive pre-term. We spent many hours in delivery suite. Finally I was transferred to a ward to be monitored. I spent 3 long days there waiting for my Ketones to return to normal & to ensure baby had a full 48 hours of time to let the steroids work. I was finally discharged once it was believed that baby & I were both well enough. Back home, I am totally exhausted but glad all is OK. Now to play the waiting game & see if he does decide to arrive earlier than planned!
How big is the baby? As large as a pineapple!
Total weight gain / loss? +14 lb
Maternity clothes? I spent most of the week in a hospital robe & pyjamas – probably the most comfortable I’ve been!
Sleep? Terrible, but not the fault of pregnancy. Being sick kept me up all night & then being woken up every hour in hospital either by midwives checking my stats or other patients snoring!
Best moment this week? I got to see baby on a scan! First time I’ve seen him since my 20 week scan. He is very much bigger now 😀
Symptoms? Where do I start? Vomiting, contractions, headaches, pelvic pressure… basically early labour.
Food cravings? Water! And fruit. Anything that would help re-hydrate me.
Food aversions? Foods that you associate with not wanting to eat when being sick, so most things!
Stretch marks? Still just the old ones, no new ones have appeared.
What I miss? Spending time with Sophie – I missed her so much this week & my full attention has really been on baby.
What I’m looking forward to? I can’t wait for baby to arrive to help put my mind at ease
Bump? Moving normally, just concerned about his heart rate dips…
