Ronald the Rhino Book Review
As a teacher & a mum, I am a HUGE fan of Twinkl – a website full of educational resources to support learning in the classroom & at home. Their ethos is simple –
“Every child should be loved and nurtured, as they are unique and special. That’s why we believe so strongly in publishing the most engaging and inspiring materials.”
For more information, read our full review of Twinkl here.
I love being a Twinkl blogger & regularly read their Twinkl Originals story e-books to Sophie. Therefore, I was really excited when they told me about their NEW Twinkl Book Club! The book club is a subscription based service whereby you receive their original ebooks, but in a beautiful printed format. Even better, the books can be used to unlock thousands of cross curricular resources, specifically designed for each of the books.
Ronald the Rhino
“Ronald the Rhino is big and strong, but Ronald is sad because he longs to be interesting like his forest friends. Discover more about how Ronald’s friends help him to realise how special he truly is!”
Ronald the Rhino is a lovely tale about a rhino who lacks self-confidence & believes that everyone else has better qualities than him. After trying to be more like his friends, Snake & Leopard, they help him realise how wonderful he is just being himself.
The story has got some important messages behind it and is a great starting point for discussing topics of friendship & self-confidence with children. The story is aimed at 4 – 7 year olds, but 2 year old Sophie loved the pictures & the story. Furthermore, she enjoyed listening to the rhyming sentences used throughout.
Twinkl AR App
How can you make an already engaging book even more exciting? By having the characters come alive in 3D form! To do this, you can download the Twinkl AR App from the App Store. Best of all, it’s FREE! This is the first time I’ve ever seen this & I was just as excited as Sophie! To use the AR parts of the book, you just need to hold your device facing the book & the characters come to life! It doesn’t work on every page, therefore you have to look out for the blue square at the bottom.
As you can imagine, Sophie thought this was amazing! We had great fun trying to get Ronald to stand up on his feet & turn upside down! Sophie even tried to pick him up as it seemed so real to her!
Ronald the Rhino Resources
In wonderful Twinkl style, this isn’t just a book – it also comes with loads of teaching resources too. These can be used at home or in school. For Sophie we used the preschool aimed resources – she loved scribbling on the colouring pages & had a go with play-dough mats. I also made her the stick puppets which we used to re-tell the story in a different way.
There are also plenty of activities suitable for older children, including a rhyming poem activity, crosswords, word-searches, creative writing resources & maths / science themed activities.
We really enjoyed reading this book & using the app added an exciting extra element! It’s great to have a physical copy of this lovely story plus all the extra worksheets & activities available are brilliant!
**We received a copy of the book for the purpose of this Ronald the Rhino Book Review. All opinions are our own.
