Xtava Pro-Satin Infrared Straightener Review
As my regular readers will know, I have a small, whirlwind toddler & am currently pregnant with baby number 2 so life is currently rather hectic. Getting ready in the morning is rather interesting… trying to bathe Sophie & sort myself out whilst battling nausea & low blood pressure has meant I haven’t been taking much care of my appearance – particularly my hair! Most days it gets scraped back into a loose bun, normally whilst wet!
Recently, I was asked to try out a new straightener from Xtava & I thought that maybe this was a sign that I should start taking a bit more care. I do love my hair normally & hate seeing it in the state it is currently in. Therefore I decided to give them a go!

The straighteners themselves come in a black storage bag which is lined with a silver foil, offering heat protection if packed away whilst still hot.
How to Use Them
The straighteners are extremely easy to use (if needed, there’s a user guide giving clear instructions). They are turned on by a small power button on the inside & heat up immediately. An infrared light strip on the inside of the irons lights up red, indicating that they are switched on. You can choose from 11 temperature settings using the up & down arrows inside the straighteners – heat options range from 130°C-230°C. Once chosen, the LED display on the straighteners shows the temperature rising rapidly until it reaches the desired heat. The ceramic plates mean that the temperature is reached within just 90 seconds!
My favourite part – the auto shut off feature! I am terrible for leaving my straighteners on for too long & often hear the beeping sound coming from my GHDs, telling me off!
I have quite long, straight & thick hair & my current GHDs do an excellent job of managing it. Therefore, I wasn’t really looking for new straighteners (especially ones that are so much cheaper) & so was quite sceptical about using these…
I divided my hair into 2 sections & was actually really impressed by how quickly I could straighten it with the large, flat irons. The extra-wide bottom floating plate meant I could catch a large amount of hair, reducing the time it would take compared to straighteners with narrower plates.
As someone who dyes their hair, I need to use products that protect it, especially from heat. The infrared heat technology claims to do less damage to hair cuticles. How? Apparently regular heat damages the surface of the hair and causes frizz, but the infrared rays work by penetrating the innermost layer of the strands, heating them from the inside out. After using these straighteners for some time, I must say I haven’t noticed any damage to my hair at all so far!
I was also really pleased that the straighteners left my hair feeling silky & smooth. The ceramic tourmaline plates use ionic technology, reducing the hair’s surface tension, leaving my hair looking shiny and frizz-free. Fortunately, this lasted throughout the day.
Finally, I was really impressed with the length of the cable – there is nothing more frustrating than not being able to reach the mirror from the plug socket! The cable on these straighteners, combined with the 360 degree swivel, gave plenty of freedom to move around.
My only criticism – as someone who likes to add a lot of shape to my hair if I am going on a night out or to a special event, the large irons did make it harder to curl the hair as much as I like. You can still curl around the plates slightly at the bottom, avoiding the “I’ve just ironed my hair” look, but not as much as I would like.
For £29.99 budget straighteners, you can’t go wrong with these! They didn’t pull my hair, in fact they glided effortlessly along it. The heat that they could reach was impressive & did not cause any damage. My hair was just as straight & smooth as it would have been with my GHDs & these are so much cheaper!
I will be continuing to use these for a more casual, every day look &, if anything ever happened to my GHDs, I feel like I have found a fabulous replacement that won’t break the bank!
