Teaching with PlanBee: Fantastic Christmas Lesson Plans
Anyone that follows me & my blog will know how much I love doing crafts & activities with the kids. I am always trawling the internet for inspiration on what I can do next & I have a good idea where to look for more specific curriculum planning due to my teacher years. However, I was intrigued when PlanBee got in touch to ask if I would review their planning website as I hadn’t heard of them before!
Plan Bee Resources
PlanBee describes themselves as:
“Your hive of primary teaching resources to take the sting out of planning”
Created by a teacher, for teachers, Plan Bee is packed full of downloadable PDF lesson packs with plans, presentations, activity ideas & a range of printable resources.
The website is easy to use & they have some fantastic reviews from other teachers on TrustPilot.
As with all pre-written planning, it is vital to remember that every child, & every school, is different. Plan Bee make it very clear that their resources are flexible & should be adapted to meet needs.
Something that is really good about their resources is the time-saving element. All lessons are ready-to-teach. This means that all activities come with clear instructions for a teaching input, a list of included resources, differentiation three ways, a suggested plenary activity & assessment questions. All of their lessons also come with a slideshow presentation & most also have a range of printable sheets too. In other words, that’s (almost!) everything you need to successfully deliver a lesson without spending hours on planning!
Delightful Decorations: Christmas Planning
As part of my review, I was given access to their Christmas unit plans with Delightful Decorations aimed at KS1 & Seasonal Stockings aimed at KS2.
With Sophie being 3, she isn’t in KS1 yet, however, we decided to give Delightful Decorations a go with a lot of support from me.
Each Christmas unit came with 6 individual lesson plans with clear instructions, all with an end goal in mind. With Delightful Decorations, it was to sew a bauble to hang on a Christmas Tree. I was able to easily read through the teaching input sections & they gave me a clear idea of what I needed to do to introduce the ‘lesson’ & the steps we would take throughout. It also told me resources I would need so I could grab these beforehand.
For Sophie, each lesson plan comes with a slideshow presentation which had lovely clear images for her to look at & prompts for me to discuss with her.
Finally, the pack included worksheet(s) for each lesson, all of which were differentiated in three ways. I thought this was dealt with really nicely & it didn’t just involve lower ability children doing less work – something that really annoys me! We completed the activities for lower ability children due to Sophie’s age & she absolutely loved every minute of it. If you don’t fancy doing the main activity suggested, then there is an alternative, ‘Fancy something different…?’, activity.
Finally, there is a plenary to complete the activity & some assessment questions. We didn’t use these as we aren’t currently in an education setting, however, I would certainly use them in school.
We followed each of the 6 lesson plan units & were super pleased with our finished results! Sophie learnt some brilliant new skills such as sewing & threading a needle. Brilliant for practising her fine motor skills. The lessons also gave her practice at the skills she is currently developing such as cutting with scissors & drawing from observation.
Overall, we really enjoyed working our way through PlanBee’s Christmas resources. It’s good value for money, with memberships starting at £9.99 per year. You can also choose a free membership which allows you to Pay As You Go. I think this is a great idea as it means you only pay for what you really need. It’s certainly a site I will be returning to when I need some more ideas & for when I get back into teaching in school. It’s also great for home educators so if you get a chance, definitely take a look!
