5 Terrific Tips For New Bloggers

January 14, 2021 By lporter Leave a Comment

5 Terrific Tips For New Bloggers

Looking for a lockdown side-line or perhaps an entirely new enterprise that you might make a career out of?

Blogging isn’t a bad choice – if you can write engagingly about a topic you’re passionate about then you can make some pocket money or if you monetise it rigorously and work with sponsors and outreach partners, perhaps even profit significantly.

Either way, as well as the potential income, the experience of connecting with an audience about something you find nourishing can be very therapeutic.

Sounds good?

Take a look at these five tips for new bloggers.

  1. Choose your niche

In order to make a generalist blog readable, you’ll have to write very well about each one of a wide range of topics, which is no easy task for a solo blogger.

So instead of coming across as a jack of all trades but master of none, lean into a niche you feel comfy with and really go to town finding different angles for each article. If you’re not sure where to start, this piece on blog niches from WP Beginner should help.

  1. Differentiate

There are countless blogs out there, so you’ll have to differentiate in order to stand out from the crowd.

Finding an unusual niche is one way to do this, but even if you’ve got a lot of competition in a crowded marketplace, building a brand that’s distinctive – from the voice, tone and style of its writing to its brand colourway and social media presence – helps you succeed.

  1. Hone your writing skills

You don’t have to be a pro writer to start blogging, but you do need to communicate in a clear and captivating way that makes people want to come back regularly for more and share your posts with their friends.

Tools like the Hemingway app can help you hone your Plain English skills and by reading widely, you’ll develop a style that adds that crucial dash of charm and panache.

  1. Balance quality with frequency

Publishing a new blog regularly means that your audience knows it’s worth their while checking in often to read your latest musings and also boosts your SEO performance, which is a delightful double-whammy.

But always prioritise quality – better to publish one quality blog post per week than five weak ones that dilute your brand and come across as spammy.

  1. Don’t forget SEO

Blogs which perform well address content which there’s already a demand for, therefore you should use SEO and social listening tools to work out what’s on your customers’ minds.

Also, your blogs should be formatted a certain way and contain the right balance of inbound and outbound links – if you aren’t sure about this, talk to an SEO specialist like Maratopia.

Follow these five solid tips, position yourself properly and play the long game in order to make blogging work wonderfully for you – best of luck!

Bloggers Behind the Screens: Featuring Pickle & Poppet

Pickle & Poppet: meeting the blogger behind the screen

Bloggers Behind the Screens is a monthly interview series, where fellow bloggers come together to answer a series of questions on a specific theme. This is a chance to get acquainted with a whole range of bloggers, some of whom you may not have encountered before, and learn a little more about them!

This month, we’re talking to bloggers about the very thing that makes them bloggers. Their blogs.

When did you start blogging and why?

I started blogging in December 2016 when I was on maternity leave with my youngest and wanted to do something that was for me. I’ve always read blogs and spoke to a friend of mine who writes her own (Mimi Rose & Me) I guess you could say she inspired me to start. It has always been a bit of a hobby blog.

How did you come up with the name for your blog?

I trawled through so many names and batted them off my husband. Pickle & Poppet are the nicknames I used to call the children and so it felt fitting really.

What do you blog about? Has that changed from when you first started?

I used to blog about being a Mum on maternity leave and whilst my blog is mostly about parenting and toys, I am writing more about lifestyle pieces and things for me. I’ve started writing about moving house and will be sharing all things decorating now we have moved. It really is family life.

Is your blog your job, your hobby or your side hustle?

I would say it is a hobby come side hustle. I never in a million years thought people would actually read what I wrote, let alone have the opportunity to work with some great companies. And whilst the blog is small, it has meant that we have been able to give the kids extra treats or days out when things are a bit tighter financially.

What is the best thing or experience that blogging has given you?

Belief in myself I think. For a while I lost a lot of belief about things I could achieve and blogging has given that back to me. A build on some of my confidence.

What is your favourite thing in the whole world to write about?

My kids. Naturally. They complete me and make me pull my hair out at the same time. Their milestones and just writing feelings down that they may not understand right now, but one day they will.

What skills (the more unusual the better!) has blogging taught you?

I’m sure there are loads! Can I think of any right now – not really. I think for me it is things like how you can use blue tac to keep a product in place for a photo shot. Or take the shot and photoshop bits out, or indeed into some degree. I don’t do all that much of that if there is a bit to be done I hand it to the hubby to sort.

What is your favourite post from your blog? Give us the link and tell us why it’s your favourite.

My favourite? That’s mean, I love lots of posts on my blog for various reasons. I think my absolute favourite was “A thank you for looking after my son” https://pickleandpoppet.uk/thank-you-nursery/ When my oldest left preschool to go to school it was a really emotional time and I remember seeing the nursery manager wipe a tear from her eye at their graduation party. That was what spurred me to write this. The post made me teary writing it and to this day as I read it or remember that time my eyes fill with tears.

Have you ever been on TV or radio in your capacity as a blogger? If so, what for? If not, do you think it’s something you’d like to have a go at?

No never. I am always in awe of people that do this. Not because I want to but because I think they are so brave for doing it. I don’t think I would ever have the courage to do something like that.

What is your least favourite thing about blogging? There must be something you don’t like about it…

Late nights. Sometimes if life has happened and I have a deadline or a post to finish it means writing past my bedtime and that is never something I am good at!

Do you have any advice to give to anybody out there thinking of starting a blog right now?

Give it a go. You can read lots of advice but until you do it you never really know. If you’re stuck, shout someone is there to help you if you need it.

Where do you do most of your blogging? Do you have a home office, are you on the sofa or do you prefer to be out and about when writing posts?

Sitting on my sofa in the evenings normally with a Netflix box set playing in the background.

Be honest. How many unwritten posts are in your drafts right now? How many are likely to see daylight?

3 in my drafts, but then I have collaborations and reviews to do as well so that would make about 7. I like to have stuff sitting in there though, saves the writers block!

What are you most excited about for your blog in the last six months or so of 2019? Anything awesome in the pipeline for the summer or are we forever winging it?

I’m just seeing where it takes me. I’m enjoying writing the content and happy to just go with the flow and see what happens, rightly or wrongly. I don’t have a plan other than to write and enjoy myself.

Finally, what is your absolute favourite thing about being a blogger?

When I get a comment that starts “I really needed to read this today” it is good to know that on that day at that time, someone read a post of mine and didn’t feel alone!
