Christmas storybooks are the perfect treat to snuggle up with on the lead up to the big day & babies shouldn’t miss out on any fun Christmas reading! Below is a list of sturdy board Christmas books for babies that they can grab, chew & flip their way through whilst giving them their first experiences of reading.
Sophie adored this as a baby (& is still keen now!). This delightful book has bright, contrasting illustrations & Christmassy sounds to match the different pages. From sparkly snowflakes, twittering birds to Santa flying in his sleigh, this book is ideal for stimulating a baby’s developing eyesight & listening skills. Plus, it has lots of Christmas fun!
By the author of the wonderful ‘T’hat’s Not My …’ book series, this lovely board book is ideal for sharing with the very young. As the title suggests, there’s lots of tactile elements throughout the book for baby to explore with colourful festive pictures. Each image has a simple description underneath, helping babies to associate words & pictures. Also, each image has a different material to feel helping to develop sensory skills. An ideal first Christmas board book for babies & young toddlers.
This Christmas themed book is part of the ‘Baby Sees’ series, designed especially for young babies. There are blocks of colour, black backgrounds & bright simple Christmas shapes to help visual & brain development. We used similar books & pictures with Sophie as a baby. She was fascinated by the strong contrasting colours, which she would stare at happily. I’d like to think it supported her development – it certainly helped her love of books!
Not strictly a Christmas book, but Miffy has been a long time favourite – first for me & now for Sophie. In this story, Miffy goes & plays in the snow where she rides a sledge, goes skating & builds a snowman. She also finds a little bird who is very cold so she helps him to build a shelter to keep warm. For babies, the illustrations are ideal for developing their visual focus & the simple story is a great way of introducing them to new words, whilst listening to your familiar voice.
Yes, it’s one of our star authors again – Fiona Watt! This book is full of colourful, festive & wintery pictures with simple words. There are lots of festive surprises on every page, including chirping robins, skating penguins, sledging mice, and a twinkling Christmas tree. Plenty to talk about with your young baby in this ‘make you smile’ robust board book.
