Readingmate: FREE APP Inspiring Reading in Children

September 19, 2021 By lporter 40 Comments

I love reading. I read ALL the time as a little girl, always walking around the house with my head in a book, not looking where I was going. I would love to instil the same passion for reading in my own children and I regularly sit with my older daughter as she learns to become a reading pro.

Sometimes learning to read with Sophie can be hard. She gets upset if stuck on a word or if she can’t remember one of her phonics sounds. At one point she told me she doesn’t like reading which broke my heart. Since then I have been working extra hard to get her back on track and have been sourcing books that I know she will love. I am very fortunate as I work in a school with a wonderful library and, as an infant teacher, have a good knowledge of what constitutes a ‘quality book’. I also see how young children react to stories I read at school and can then bring them home for my own children to enjoy. However, I am well aware that not everyone is in this position and so anything that can help parents expose their children to the best books out there is a win in my eyes.

It was with great pleasure, therefore, when husband & wife duo Hannah (a secondary/SEND English teacher) & James got in touch about their new business, Readingmate.

Grumbalina & the Day Everything Changed: Review

Grumbalina & the Day Everything Changed: Review

We love discovering new children’s books, so this month we have partnered up with children’s author Karina Frederiks, who has recently launched the first in a series of new books; the tales of Grumbalina and friends. The six-part series looks at a young fairy growing up and dealing with the delights and stresses of innocence.

The series centres around the magical world of Pufftown, where the fairies live. It is a place of spells and magic where anything is possible and yet there are hurdles along the way that they must face; lack of motivation, jealousy and sometimes failure. However, together, the fairies learn valuable life lessons in facing these hurdles and discover the true meaning of friendship, perspective and rooting for the underdog.

In the first book, “Grumbalina & the Day Everything Changed” readers meet Grumbalina and the other fairies and learn about their world of spells and magic. The school year has just started again after summer and Grumbalina doesn’t want to go back. Not only does she struggle with her spells, Grumbalina doesn’t have any friends at school. But everything is about to change very quickly.

This new series will take your children on a magical adventure and will resonate with readers young and old, with valuable lessons of friendship and growing up.

Karina said; “Grumbalina is all about growing up and learning life’s valuable lessons and I hope the book and its stories resonate with my readers. Everybody has days where they live in the only grey cloud in the sky. It is up to you, as the reader, to choose who you are and what you allow yourself to think or be.”

Overall

My children really enjoyed this book! A delightful story and super colourful, both children were really engaged. The books are aimed at children aged 4 and upwards, with fun illustrations and imaginative and relatable storylines.

The book is priced at £8.99 but is currently available at the launch price of £5.99. There is a range of fun and exciting merchandise also available on the site – www.grumbalina.com. Get yours now & hop on the next cloud and float off to Pufftown!

Why is Reading so Important for Children?

July 27, 2020 By lporter Leave a Comment

Why is Reading so Important

Why is Reading so Important for Children?

One of the first things your child will learn to do when they start school is read. Without adequate reading skills, your child will struggle with every single one of their school subjects, not just English. However, reading isn’t just important for educational purposes, it also helps children with a variety of other invaluable life skills. I have teamed up with a pre prep school in Kent to explore further.

There are so many different genres of books out there, and whichever your child prefers will help expand their general knowledge. Sci-Fi novels, for instance, might help them understand more about space and different planets. Other books may touch upon different historical or cultural events, to help your child learn about things outside of their little bubble. So, whatever type of text your child chooses to read, whether its fiction or non-fiction, book or blog, they will slowly but surely start to develop a vast understanding of different things.

Reading is also great for helping children with their vocabulary. The ability to understand, and correctly spell, lots of different words and phrases will help your child become excellent communicators, which will improve their confidence and ability to speak up. If they don’t know how to express themselves, whether verbally or in written form, they might feel quite frustrated and take their emotions out in other ways.

As well as helping your child with various skills and knowledge, reading will also help them relax. Delving into a good book is great for distracting people from the stresses of the day and allows them to forget their worries. So, if your child struggles to sleep at night or they’re struggling at school, it might be worth taking a trip to the library and letting them pick out a good book.

Children nowadays are spending far too much time playing on digital devices, such as smartphones and games consoles. With that said, it’s important to encourage them to try different activities, reading being one of them. It’s important that they stimulate their mind, body and soul in a variety of different ways so that they don’t start to become complacent and addicted to their phones.

Picture Story Starters for Little Kids: REVIEW

Picture Story Starters for Little Kids: REVIEW

Picture Story Starters for Little Kids: REVIEW

**Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links and I receive a commission if you visit a link and buy something on my recommendation. Purchasing via an affiliate link doesn’t cost you any extra, and I only recommend products and services I LOVE & trust. All opinions are my own.

As a child, I was obsessed with writing stories – I loved writing & would often get into trouble in class for writing rather than doing my maths work! As I’ve got older, I just don’t get the time to write imaginatively anymore, but I’m lucky I have a very eager 5-year old who also loves writing!

Sophie will often ask me to help give her a starting point for her stories. However, my imagination is certainly not what it used to be & we end up using the same ideas repeatedly. That’s where the Picture Starters For Little Kids book comes to the rescue!

This lovely writing book is full of fun prompts, bold pictures & questions to inspire children to write sentences and stories. It also covers a variety of themes kids will love. There’s everything from dragons to pirates, planes & magic lamps!

The blurb states:

“50 picture prompts to get them thinking, fire their imagination & fill them with enthusiasm to write amazing stories”

Sounds good to me!

Picture Story Starters for Little Kids: REVIEW

How Does It Work?

Children can browse through the book & pick & choose the pages that take their fancy. Each prompt is written on a double-page spread with a large black and white picture & one or two related short questions to answer. On the opposite side is a lined page with a story prompt.

Picture Story Starters for Little Kids: REVIEW

Sophie’s favourite one was –

PICTURE: A dragon

QUESTIONS: Is the dragon friendly? What do you think dragons eat?

PROMPT: Write a story about a pet dragon

What Age Group is it Suitable for?

The book we used is aimed at KS1, however, my Reception aged daughter really enjoyed it! Even if your child isn’t ready to start writing stories, it’s a great prompt for discussions developing those all-important communication skills. They can also practise their fine motor development by colouring the pictures & practising letter formation on the lines. And, of course, phonics practise!

There’s also a KS2 version, suitable for ages 7-11. Both versions are available to buy from Amazon.

**We were sent a copy of the book in exchange for this Picture Story Starters for Little Kids review. All thoughts & opinions are our own.

Reading a good book is the perfect way to celebrate Valentines Day with young children! Below we have chosen our favourite Valentines books for toddlers – a fabulous mix of adorable characters, important messages about love & kindness & a whole heap of cute pictures!

valentines books for toddlers

  • Guess How Much I Love You – Sam McBratney

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“I love you right up to the moon – and back“

Love is not an easy thing to measure as Little Nutbrown Hare & Big Nutbrown Hare discover! This extremely popular & timeless book is perfect for Valentine’s Day & the little back and forth about who loves the other more is super sweet. There is a dedicated website for the whole series of Guess How Much I Love You books where you can find interesting facts about the author, cute merchandise & simple children’s activities linked to the stories here.

  • Love Monster – Rachel Bright

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

”You see, sometimes, when you least expect it…love finds you.”

This is one of our favourite bedtime stories! It’s all about a monster – the only monster in Cutesville. Feeling lonely & looking for love he decides to go out into the big wide world to find another monster to share his life with. And, of course, he does find love but when he least expects it. The artwork is fab with bright, big pages filled with colour. Great for teaching that being different is okay. There is a whole series of these Love Monster books, all centred around this sweet character.

  • The Valentine’s Day Cat – Sabuhi Gard

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“What will Jerry get up to next?”

This is the story of ‘Naughty Jerry’ the tabby cat who becomes injured on Valentine’s Day. This results in his owners’ own Valentine’s Day plans becoming unravelled as they have to take him to the vets. Children will love mischievous Jerry & the illustrations are colourful & well detailed. It is a fun story, perfect for bedtime with a few lessons to be learned along the way.

  • My Fuzzy Valentine – Naomi Kleinberg

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“You are my fuzzy little valentine and I love you”

We are big Elmo fans & so love this book all about Elmo finding a mysterious anonymous Valentine. Who could it be from? It’s perfect for young children as it has some tactile fuzzy flocking on each page for them to touch (basically a fuzzy Elmo!). Also great for Sesame Street fans as many of the main characters appear in this book including our favourite – the cookie monster!

  • Love Is My Favourite Thing: A Plumdog Story – Emma Chichester Clark

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“I AM PLUM, but I love being called Plummie. And LOVE is my favourite thing”

Another lovely Love themed book, this time from Emma Chichester Clark. This story tells the tale of Plummie the dog who, above all other things in life, love is her favourite! The book is actually based on the author’s own dog & celebrates their unconditional love – something dog owners (& parents!) will genuinely relate to.

  • Love… – Emma Dodd

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“Love is there to catch you when you are about to fall”

A beautiful story that brings tears to my eyes whenever I read it! This story tells the tale of a young rabbit who, despite finding love all around him, knows that his parent’s love is the best love of all. Young children will appreciate the sweet, gold gilded illustrations & the sentimental rhymes used to describe mum rabbit’s love.

  • Frog in Love – Max Velthuijs

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“Frog was sitting on the river bank. He felt funny. He didn’t know if he was happy or sad”

There are several ‘Frog’ books in this series by Max Velthujis but this is the very first. This story introduces Frog who is feeling unwell. It turns out, in fact, that he is in love, but who with? Well… a duck! Great for teaching about diversity & being tolerant of others but in a child-friendly way. Frog & Duck. Green & White. Love knows no bounds.

  • The Biggest Kiss – Joanna Walsh

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“Kisses on noses & kisses on toes-es”

A lovely story of affection, with plenty of kisses for everyone! It follows penguin who sets out to discover what kissing is like amongst all the different creatures in the animal world. The book is full of cute rhymes & is beautifully illustrated. The best bit is getting a big kiss from your little one at the end!

  • The Hug – Eoin McLaughlin

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“Hedgehog was feeling sad. As sad as a hedgehog can feel. So sad only one thing could help... Tortoise was feeling sad. As sad as a tortoise can feel. So sad only one thing could help..”

Hedgehog & Tortoise are both looking for a hug. They ask every animal they come across for a hug, but no-one will give them one! Each animal is full of excuses why they won’t hug them. Of course, would you hug a spiky hedgehog or a boney tortoise? Fortunately, they find each other & discover that there is something for everyone! We love this story as it is so heartwarming & is a bit different from the usual kid’s book as the two separate stories meet in the middle.

  • Huggy Kissy – Leslie Patricelli

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“Tuggy, tuggy. Huggy, huggy? Squeeze, squeeze. Don’t stop, please!”

This book is one of ten board book stories featuring this cute one-haired baby. This particular book is dedicated to showing baby all the different ways of showing affection – hugs, kisses, squeezes & more. Perfect for younger children with bold, colourful illustrations & simple language.

  • Hugs and Kisses – Sam Hay

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“Big Blue Whale is feeling small. Everyone has someone to hug apart from him!”

This lovely book is similar to The Hug as it tells two parallel stories that meet in the middle. Big Blue Whale & Octopus are both feeling sad as they can’t find someone to hug or kiss. Lots of sea creatures want to give Big Blue Whale a hug, but he’s just too big. Lots of sea creatures want to give Octopus a kiss, but her tentacles are just too tangly. The story follows the two creatures as they travel across the ocean, finally meeting their perfect match. Perfect for young children with its pop-up pictures & lovely illustrations. Children can choose which story they wish to follow first & then flip it to read a different perspective. Great for teaching about empathy.

  • Pop-Up Peekaboo! I Love You – DK

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“Look at all these lovely presents! What a lucky sheep! There’s one final surprise. Open the door and take a peep“

We love all Dorling Kindeserly books & this one is no exception. In this story it’s Valentine’s Day & someone is sending Sheep presents. But who is sending all of these lovely surprises? Young children will love this book as who doesn’t love pop-ups? Perfect for lifting the flaps for fun games of peekaboo. The book itself is nice & sturdy so is perfect for toddlers & babies. The characters are cute & cuddly – the perfect combination for Valentine’s Day reading!

  • The Day it Rained Hearts – Felicia Bond

13 Valentines Books for Toddlers That They Will Fall In Love With

“One day it started raining hearts, and Cornelia Augusta caught one.”

Our final pick in our Valentines books for toddlers post is a story about the day it rained hearts! The main character, Cornelia Augusta, catches the hearts & gives them out as Valentine’s cards to her animal friends. It is colourful, simple & well written. Great for teaching about thoughtfulness & feelings. It also gives plenty of inspiration for Valentine’s crafts.
