Musical Instruments for Preschoolers: Little Princess Grand Piano Review
Since birth, Sophie has been seriously into music. Singing rhymes & songs are part of her every day & she has been shaking rattles since she could grip something in her tiny hands.
More recently she has come to realise that you can make music by playing an instrument & that it is something that takes time & practise. We have been slowly building her collection of musical instruments for preschoolers. Her current favourite toys are a recorder & a book with a built-in piano. She is learning to follow notes to make the sounds required for her favourite nursery rhymes. So, this Little Princess Grand Piano from Smyth’s Toys could not have arrived at a better time!
Little Princess Grand Piano
Big Steps Groove is a fabulous collection of musical toys from Smyth’s, aimed at preschool-aged children. From CD players to rock guitars & bongo drums, these toys are ideal for budding musicians.
We were sent the Little Princess Grand Piano to test &, all I can say is, I have one very happy little maestro! I was a little wary as not a fan of the idea of the ‘girly’ little princess & pink targeting, but actually, the piano is a great toy and is packed so full of fun & educational features I put those concerns aside.
The piano has 37 black & white keys across 3 octaves. Every time a key is touched, a little red LED lights up to show which key was pressed. I love this as it helps children learn the different notes which, helpfully, have the names written along the top.
There are 8 different styles of background music rhythms to choose from & these can be changed by the touch of a button. They include Samba, Disco & Blues.
You can even change the sound with 8 instrument tones! Children can choose from a piano, organ, guitar, violin, trumpet, mandolin, flute & a music box.
One of mine & Sophie’s favourite features is the LED teaching mode. Once selected, the piano plays a preset tune to the child first so they can hear how it is meant to sound. Then, the red LEDs light up to show them which notes to press to recreate the tune. It’s not easy – the notes move around quite fast however it reinforces that all musicians need to practise!
Another favourite feature is the built-in microphone. It is connected to the piano by a short wire & can then be placed in a holder which is conveniently at child mouth height. It can be turned on & off separately from the piano & does a good job of amplifying voices. Children can also record their own tunes by activating the recording function!
The final key feature of this piano is the MP3 connectivity which allows users to connect an MP3 player or a smartphone. This allows you to listen to the music through speakers.
In terms of appearance, the Big Steps Groove Little Princess Grand Piano has 3 elegant legs which easily push into the main body, a top with a propped-open design & also comes with a matching piano stool. The pink is fairly subtle & doesn’t look too plasticky.
What Does It Help Little Ones Learn?
Playing an instrument has so many wonderful developmental benefits. It is a fantastic way of encouraging Imaginative & Creative play, allowing children to put on musical performances & creating their own musical patterns. Listening to sounds is also the first step in developing communication skills & learning to read. Exploring sound & rhythm helps children to develop memory, spotting patterns & problem-solving skills. Furthermore, playing an instrument is a great way of improving motor skills. When children learn rhythm, they learn coordination, fine motor skills & maths. When they dance to a rhythm, they develop gross motor skills & balance, all whilst having fun! Through play, children can develop a lifelong love of music.
Overall, the piano has a high-quality sound, looks good & has a great selection of features. It’s not so big that it takes up too much space. The piano does require 4x AA batteries which sadly aren’t included.
Sophie has already spent hours playing on this piano. It’s the first thing I hear as she goes downstairs in the mornings! I think I can safely say it’s a big hit & the perfect gift for any little music lovers.
