Emily Brown & the Thing Review: Birmingham Hippodrome
This Christmas our family has had the absolute delight of watching the production of Emily Brown & the Thing at the Birmingham Hippodrome.
The performance is based on the much-loved book by Cressida Cowell (author of How to Train your Dragon) & Neal Layton. Produced by Tall Stories, the group who brought The Gruffalo & Snail on a Whale to life on stage, we knew we would be in for a treat!
What is it About?
Emily Brown & the Thing is a story with a classic theme – being scared, particularly at night. It follows the adventures of Emily Brown (Sophie Alice) & her grey rabbit Stanley (Jordan Turner). One winters night, they hear a Thing (Sam Buitekant) crying outside the window. He has lost his cuddly & can’t get to sleep without it. Emily & Stanley set off an incredibly brave adventure to the Dark & Scary Woods to try & find Thing’s lost cuddly toy. The formidable heroine also travels to the Whirling Wastes & Whiny Witches’ Cavern to locate his bedtime milk & special green medicine, but nothing will help him get to sleep!
So, what is really troubling the Thing – and will anyone ever get to sleep?
We loved it! My 3 year old especially enjoyed it & was rather upset when it ended! The original music & tunes were super catchy & also helped move the story along. An extra element of fun was that Emily & Stanley would switch between human-size & puppets which kept my daughter entranced. The three cast members did a fantastic job of bringing the story to life with their incredible energy & sense of fun. They could also tone it down & showed tenderness when addressing the Thing’s needs. The storytelling was done beautifully & I am hoping my daughter can learn something from Emily Brown about conquering fears!
Overall, I would highly recommend this festive family show & booking tickets to go & see it as soon as possible! It is suitable for children aged 3+ & features original music, puppetry, physical storytelling & also plenty of laughs.
